South Short-Changed on South Road

Friday, 16 October 2009

In the 2006 election campaign the South Australian Government committed to build an underpass for South Road under Sturt Road at a cost of $140 million and indicated this money would be provided in future Budgets.

The Federal Government has announced several times that they are providing $500 million towards an upgrade of South Road which includes a flyover at Sturt Road.

Yesterday’s announcement of a South Road expressway at a budgeted cost of $812 million leaves very little from either the Federal or State Government contribution to commence work at the intersection of South Road and Sturt Road at Bedford Park.

There are several key questions the State and Federal Ministers need to answer.

Of the $930 million allocated for the upgrade of South Road between 2009 and 2014, now that $812 million will be spent on the ‘Superway’ and $70 million will be spent on a planning study how much of the remaining $48 million will be spent on the grade separation at Sturt Road and how much will be needed?

What has happened to the South Australian Government’s election commitment for $140 million to build an underpass for South Road at Sturt Road?

When will the grade separation at Sturt Road be completed?
