Road Paved With Broken Promises

Thursday, 18 February 2010

In February 2006, Mike Rann committed to build an underpass at South Road under Sturt Road to ease traffic congestion at this major bottleneck.

Prior to the 2007 Federal election, Kevin Rudd promised a $500 million investment for South Road and promised that a South Road flyover would be constructed at Sturt Road.

Fixing the traffic congestion at this intersection is important for people studying at Flinders University, shopping at Marion, working at Flinders Medical Centre or going to the beach at Brighton.

In subsequent joint media releases from Anthony Albanese and Patrick Conlon of September 2008, February 2009 and July 2009, the commitment to grade separation at South Road and Sturt Road was reconfirmed.

Despite all the reckless spending which State and Federal Governments are engaged in, they have shelved this election promise for infrastructure and moved on to a new batch of election promises.

Four years after the first Labor commitment to address traffic congestion at this bottleneck we are yet to see any indication of action, despite promises from both State and Federal Labor Governments.

All residents of the southern suburbs have been short changed by this broken promise.

Labor need to realise election promises do not have a use-by date.
