About Andrew
Andrew was first elected to represent the people of Boothby in March 1996 and has been proud to have been re-elected in October 1998, November 2001, October 2004 and again in November 2007.
He has lived and worked in Adelaide's inner southern suburbs for most of his life. Andrew grew up at Somerton Park and his schooling began at Paringa Park Primary School at North Brighton, before moving to St Peter’s College. He studied Medicine at the University of Adelaide from 1985 to 1990.
In 1989, Andrew became President of the Adelaide Medical Students Society. During late 1989 - early 1990, he worked as a volunteer in a mission hospital in Kwazulu/ Natal in South Africa.
Andrew completed his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1991 and undertook basic surgical training there in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, he was a surgical registrar in vascular surgery at the Repatriation General Hospital at Daw Park and a surgical registrar at the Breast Cancer Unit at Flinders Medical Centre.
In 1989, Andrew joined the Liberal Party, and in November 1994, was endorsed as the Liberal candidate for Boothby.
As a candidate, he continued to work in the medical field as a locum medical practitioner and a medical officer in Accident and Emergency at Flinders Medical Centre.
Andrew completed an Economics degree at Flinders University, undertaking subjects in economics as well as international relations and Australian history. More recently, he completed an MBA at the University of Adelaide.
His education in the medical, economics and foreign affairs fields are being put to good use in a practical sense in Parliament.
In late 2003, Andrew was appointed as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, moving from his role as Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Ageing.
In addition, Andrew has also served on a number of Parliamentary committees which have included:
- Chair, Health and Aged Care Government Policy Committee;
- Economics, Finance and Public Administration Standing Committee;
- Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade;
- Secretary, Treasury, Finance, Public Administration, Government Policy Committee; and
- Trade and Foreign Affairs Government Policy Committee.
Following the 2007 election, Andrew was appointed Shadow Minister for Employment Participation and Apprenticeships and Training and is working on Coalition policy in these areas, meets frequently with stakeholders and is holding the Labor Government to account in the area of skills and employment.
On a personal front, Andrew is married to Kate and has two children.
